The singer-songwriter on collaboration, male entitlement in the music biz, and seeking a more nuanced conversation about faith and sexuality
Singer-songwriter Julien Baker has just wrapped her latest European tour and – as we speak – is about to make her way back home to the US. “I’m looking forward to it. I love touring and I love playing live, but it’ll be nice to get some down time.”
The Tennessee native rose to queer indie icon status back in 2016 after penning her first album, Sprained Ankle, in her college dorm room. Now – after that well-deserved down time – she’ll be getting ready to get back on the road alongside fellow indie queens Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers as part of the femme-tastic, guitar-slinging supergroup, boygenius.
Both signed to Matador Records, Baker has played alongside Dacus a number of times and “hangs out with her a lot”. “Lucy and I have been friends for years, and I’ve also toured with Phoebe, though that was a while ago now.” The three artists – who each have their own queer fanbase – will still play individual sets, but at the end of the night will come together to play as a collective. “I’ve been looking forward to this tour for a while now, I’m very excited for it,” chimes Baker.
